Why recent lockdown incidents signal an urgent need for better mass communication strategies
In May 2025 alone, multiple schools, universities and organisations across the country have experienced sudden lockdown – some triggered by real threats, others by false alarms.
What these incidents have in common is a critical lesson; mass communication systems are not just help during emergencies, they’re essential.
As decision-makers responsible for the safety and wellbeing of students, staff, and wider communities, now is the time to assess whether your communication infrastructure is truly ready for the unexpected.
The incidents that got our attention
- Multiple schools in Tamworth, Staffordshire were placed in lockdown following reports of an active threat in the local area.
- School placed into full lockdown in Bromley after an internal threat. The school and authorities are currently investigating safety policies.
- Trespassers on school grounds warrant a full lockdown procedure.
- A Swindon school experienced a full evacuation after a suspicious package was found within school grounds. Parents flocked outside the school with pupils and staff evacuated to the furthest end of the school fields.
- A Surrey primary school was placed into full lockdown for over an hour after reports of nearby threat.
- Welsh school placed in full lockdown with firearms officers in attendance for potential internal threat.
Lockdowns, whether precautionary or reactive, place enormous pressure on institutional communication channels. The most common failures we’ve seen include:
- Delayed alerts: Critical minutes lost due to manual processes or outdated systems.
- Mixed messages: Conflicting information across email, SMS, app notifications, and PA systems.
These are no longer rare events—they are becoming a part of the landscape. When they happen, your ability to communicate clearly, quickly, and confidently will make the difference. Education and organisational leaders have a responsibility to ensure that communications systems are as strong as their emergency response plans. Because in a crisis, clarity saves lives.
Are you confident in your institution’s ability to communicate during a lockdown? If you’re unsure, now is the time to act. Let’s work together to make safety communication smarter, faster, and more effective—for everyone.
